Force-Free Training & Support
We believe training should be built on trust, communication, safety, and emotional wellbeing. Many rescue dogs are adjusting to entirely new environments, routines, and expectations, and they need time, understanding, and support to feel secure. Force-free, positive training methods allow dogs to learn without fear or intimidation, helping them build confidence while strengthening the bond between dog and owner.
What Is Force-Free Training?
Force-free (or positive reinforcement) training focuses on teaching dogs through kindness, patience, and consistency rather than punishment or fear-based methods. The aim is simple: to help dogs feel safe enough to learn.
Positive training focuses on encouraging the behaviours we want to see more of and supporting dogs as they learn.
It may include:
- Rewarding desired behaviours
- Teaching dogs what to do, rather than punishing mistakes
- Building trust and confidence
- Using patience, guidance, and consistency
- Supporting emotional wellbeing alongside training
This can involve:
- Treats
- Praise
- Toys
- Calm encouragement
- Enrichment and play
In day-to-day life, positive training is about guidance rather than correction.
This may include:
- Redirecting unwanted behaviours to more appropriate choices
- Rewarding calm and settled behaviour
- Preventing overwhelm where possible
- Allowing dogs time to learn and adjust
- Creating positive associations with everyday experiences
For example, if a dog jumps up, the behaviour is simply ignored and calm behaviour is rewarded once the dog has all four paws on the ground.
Force-free training does not use:
- Physical punishment
- Fear or intimidation
- Pain-based tools such as prong or shock collars
- Dominance or outdated “alpha” methods
These approaches can damage trust and may increase fear, stress, or behavioural challenges, particularly in rescue dogs who are still learning to feel safe.
Many rescue dogs:
- May never have lived in a home before
- Can feel overwhelmed or uncertain in new environments
- Are learning routines and expectations for the first time
- Need time to build trust and confidence
They do not need to be corrected. They need support, consistency, and patience while they learn how to navigate the world around them.

Other Trusted Behaviourists
Always look for trainers who use reward-based methods and avoid those using dominance, pack theory, or punishment techniques. These can harm trust and worsen fear.
