1. Purpose

At Thistle Paws Rescue (TPR), foster carers are at the heart of everything we do. We do not operate kennels; instead, we rely on a network of caring foster homes across Scotland. Fostering provides dogs with safety, love, and structure while they wait for adoption. This policy outlines our commitments to foster carers and the responsibilities expected in return.

2. Our Commitments to Foster Carers

TPR is committed to supporting foster carers by providing:

• Veterinary care: We cover all pre‑approved veterinary costs, including vaccinations, flea/worm treatment, microchipping, and neutering where appropriate.
• Equipment and supplies: We provide essential items or reimburse agreed costs.
• Ongoing support: Our fostering team is available for advice, guidance, and welfare support throughout the placement.
• Adoption management: We handle all adoption enquiries, applications, and decisions.
• Feedback opportunities: We gather your observations to help match dogs with suitable adopters.

3. Foster Carer Responsibilities

As a foster carer, you agree to:

• Provide a safe, secure, and loving environment.
• Supervise the dog appropriately and avoid leaving them for unreasonable periods.
• Keep the dog on a lead in public and never allow free roaming.
• Introduce the dog carefully to children and other pets, following TPR guidance.
• Monitor the dog’s health and behaviour, sharing regular updates (photos, videos, notes).
• Attend veterinary appointments arranged by TPR.
• Support the dog’s development through basic training, socialisation, and routine.
• Never transfer, rehome, or pass the dog to another person without TPR’s consent.

4. Media and Promotion

Photos, videos, and honest write‑ups from foster carers are essential for helping dogs find forever homes. By fostering with TPR, you agree to provide regular updates that may be used on our website, social media, and adoption listings.

5. Length of Foster Placement

Foster placements vary depending on the dog. Some may be adopted quickly, while others need more time to settle or prepare for rehoming. We ask foster carers to remain flexible and communicate openly if circumstances change.

6. Adoption by Foster Carers (“Failed Fosters”)

If you wish to adopt your foster dog, please inform us as early as possible. Foster carers are usually given first consideration, provided the home is suitable for the dog’s long‑term needs.

7. Safeguarding and Safety

Foster dogs must always be kept safe and protected from risky situations. Children should be supervised around foster dogs at all times. Any concerns regarding behaviour, health, or safety must be reported to TPR immediately.

8. Ending a Foster Placement

If you are unable to continue fostering, please give as much notice as possible so we can arrange alternative care. Emergency situations will always be prioritised, and we will support you throughout the transition.
